Matthew Holman ist seit seinem EMMY im Jahr 2008 schlagartig zu einem der gefragtesten Stylisten in Hollywood avanciert. Mit seinem Einfühlungsvermögen und seiner Professionalität dringt er Schritt für Schritt in die Glamourwelt Hollywoods hinein. Interview in deutsch und anschließend in englisch.
imSalon.at: Wie war es den EMMY Award für deine Arbeit am Set von "Days of our lives" zu gewinnen?
Matthew Holman: Ganz ehrlich? Ich war geschockt! Der Wettbewerb war so stark. Es ist eine große Ehre von den Anderen eine solche Anerkennung zu erhalten und als Beste gewählt zu werden. Die Wettbewerber 2008 waren The Hair Team(Lead By Gail Hopkins (13th nomination 4th win) Garry Allyn (4th nomination, won in 1999) Margaret Puga (3rd nomination) Kimberly Salvatore (2nd nomination) und first-time nominees Matthew Holman and Monica Sabedra) won the 5th Emmy for Days of Our Lives during the 35th annual Daytime Emmy Awards winning an Emmy for Outstanding Hairstyling in a Daytime Drama.
imSalon.at: Was ist der große Unterschied zwischen der Arbeit in einem Salon und Backstage am TV-Set?
Matthew Holman: Der größte Unterschied ist, dass man im Salon auf eine Person fokussiert, den Kunden. Am Set dient man dem Regisseur, dem Produzent, dem Kameramann und dem Schauspieler. Dies muss man alles verbinden, um es dann einem Millionenpublikum recht zu machen.
imSalon.at: Mit welchen Herausforderungen siehst du dich am Set konfrontierst?
Matthew Holman: Da gibt es viele Herausforderungen!!! Ich würde sagen das Kreieren von Looks, die die Geschichte des Schauspielers untermalen und dazu passen, jeden Tag am Set den gleichen Look zu erlangen und das Bezwingen widerspenstiger Haar für High Definition! Ein gutes Haarspray auf einen Kamm aufgesprüht ist dabei essentiell.
imSalon.at: Wie sieht es mit dem kreativen Input aus? Ich kann mir vorstellen, dass viele Menschen am Set mitreden möchten! Produzenten, Kleider Stylist, die Schauspieler selbst, .... Fühlst Du dich manchmal in deiner kreativen Arbeit eingeschränkt?
Matthew Holman: Eher nein, eigentlich wird uns viel Freiheit gelassen, da wir sehr großen Respekt genießen. Immerhin haben wir bereits 5 Emmy's für Outstanding Hairstyling in a Daytime Drama in 43 Jahren gewonnen. Wenn ein neuer Charakter in die Serie eingeführt wird, dann lese ich das Script und versuche mir den Charakter vorzustellen und ich kreiere einen passenden Look. Dann gibt es einen Test-Dreh, welchen wir mit dem Direktor, dem Schauspieler, etc. besprechen. Wenn wir unsere Hausarbeit gründlich gemacht haben, dann sind sie alle in der Regel begeistert mit dem Ergebnis.
imSalon.at: Wie näherst Du Dich neuen Szenen und Einstellungen?
Matthew Holman: Ich mache mir Gedanken über die Bedürfnisse des Teams und erkundige mich über die Details der Drehorte. Ob es Innen- oder Außenaufnahmen sind? Wird es windig sein? Wie ist das Licht? Werden Spezial Effekte benötigt oder wie wird das Outfit den Look beeinflusst? Natürlich ist es eine Team-Produktion und ich setze mich auch mit dem Regisseur zusammen, um etwas über seine Ziele zu erfahren. Danach kann ich mich an die Umsetzung machen.
imSalon.at: Gitb es eine Serie, bei der Du gerne mitwarbeiten möchtest?
Matthew Holman: I liebe die Arbeit bei 'Days of Our Lives', es ist ein großartiges Team hinter und am Set. Wir haben einen großzügig ausgestatteten Stylingraum.
Aber wenn ich wählen könnte würde ich sagen 'Weeds'. Die Schauspieler in der Serie haben alle sehr individuelle Charaktere mit tollen Frisuren und die Story ist auch toll.
imSalon.at: Welche Schauspielerin würdest Du gerne mal stylen und warum?
Matthew Holman: Reese Witherspoon- sie ist nicht nur eine sehr nette Person, sondern respektiert auch deine Kunst. Ihre Rollen haben eine unglaubliche Dynamik und das Haar ist immer Teil ihrer Persönlichkeit. Die historischen Look bei 'Walk the Line' und der Glamour Look von 'Legally Blonde' repräsentiert genau die Art von Arbeit, die ich gerne mache.
imSalon.at: Wie bist Du zu diesem Job gekommen?
Matthew Holman: Durch einen Klienten von mir! Ich habe eine Kundin, die in der PRoduktion arbeitet. Eines Tages fragte sie mich, ob ich nicht mal am TV-Set arbeiten möchte. Sie wußte von einer offenen Stelle am Set von 'Days of Our Lives'. Ich sagte sofort zu. Am Anfang arbeitete ich auf Zuruf, wann immer ich gebraucht wurde, nach 8 Monaten fragte mich der Setleiter ob ich nicht permanent am Set arbeiten möchte.
imSalon.at: Mußtest Du ein Spezial-Training für die Arbeit am TV-Set durchlaufen?
Matthew Holman: JA, Du mußt einiges an speziellen Kursen besuchen. Zum einen gibt es bestimmte Sicherheitstrainings von Seiten der Gewerkschaften. Und dann gibt es natürlich das "Learning by doing" direkt vor Ort am Filmset. Nach 3 Jahren Training am Set wird man dann alleine eingesetzt. Es macht Spaß und man lernt sehr viel zusätzlich vom Umgang mit Haarteilen, vom Perücken machen und Historienlooks.
imSalon.at: Ist es schwer in Hollywood zu arbeiten, wie sieht es mit der Konkurrenz aus?
Matthew Holman: Es ist viel Arbeit - man investiert viel Zeit. Natürlich ist es auch ein sehr politisches Umfeld und der Wettbewerb schläft nicht. Du bist immer nur so gut wie das was du zuletzt gemacht hast.
imSalon.at: Bei einer Folge von “Days of our Lives“ bist du sogar zu sehen? Wie ist es sich selbst im Film zu spielen?
Matthew Holman: Sensationell - Ich konnte es kaum glauben. Es war toll auf der anderen Seite zu stehen. Es half mir zu verstehen, was die Bedürfnisse der Schauspieler sind. Und ich weiß es zu schätzen, dass Die Crew uns involviert hat (Glen Allen - Make up & I), da wir gerade unseren Emmy gewonnen hatten.

imSalon.at: How was it winning the Emmy for your work at "Days of our lives"?
Matthew Holman: To be honest, I was completely shocked because the competition last year was so good. It was such an honor to be recognized by our peers that our team's work was judged the best. imSalon.at: What is the major difference between working in a salon, backstage and on a TV/ Movie set?
Matthew Holman: The biggest difference is that in the salon you are focused on servicing and pleasing your client. On set you are servicing the producer, director, cinematographer, and the actor. You need to put it all together and and deliver excellence that can be broadcast to millions of viewers.
imSalon.at: What are the challenges working on the set?
Matthew Holman: There are many challenges!!! I would have to say it would be creating looks that suit the character's story line, matching the looks from day to day and taming fly-aways for High Definition! A good finishing hairspray sprayed onto a comb is essential.
imSalon.at: How about creative input? I imagine there are many people having a word on the set! Producer, cloth-stylist, the actors themselves. Do you ever feel deprived in your creativity.
Matthew Holman: Actually not, we are left with a lot of freedom because our department is very respected as we have won 5 Emmy's for Outstanding Hairstyling in a Daytime Drama in 43 years. When a new character starts I am able to create the look by reading the script and understanding the character. We then film a screen test and share it with the director, actor, etc. If we have done our research correctly, they usually are thrilled with the end result.
imSalon.at: How do you approach new scenes and new settings?
Matthew Holman: I think about the team needs of the show and try to find out details like where will we be shooting? Inside or outside? Will it be windy? What is the lighting? Are there any special effects or wardrobe that will impact the style? Of course it is a team production so I will approach the director and ask for the goal. After all of that you put it together.
imSalon.at: On which show would you like to do hair?
Matthew Holman: I love working on Days of Our Lives because it is a great team and on a stage. We have a dedicated make up and hair room. If I had to choose, I would say Weeds on HBO. The Actors on the show have unique characters with great hair and an interesting story line.
imSalon.at: And which actress would you love to style, and why?
Matthew Holman: Reese Witherspoon- she seems like she's not only a kind person but she would respect you for your art. Her characters are always so dynamic and the hair is a big part in coming up with their personality. The period looks from 'Walk the Line' and glamour hair of 'Legally Blonde' are the types of work I love to do.
imSalon.at: How did you actually get this job?
Matthew Holman: Through a regular client of mine. I have a client who works for Contract Services which is the liaison between production and the hairdressing union she asked me one day if I would ever be interested in working for TV. She said she knew that there was a part time position available on Days of Our Lives. I said sure I would love to try it. I worked on a day-to-day basis and the head of department asked me to join the team permanently after about 8 months.
imSalon.at: Did you have to undergo special training for working on TV?
Matthew Holman: Yes, you have to go through a lot of specialized training. It starts out with health and safety from the union. Then on the job it is a lot of watch and learn. After 3 years of being a hairdresser trainee you are then able to train to be a journeyman. I am doing that training right now. It is a lot of fun. We are learning how to attach hair pieces, wigs, period looks etc.
imSalon.at: Is it hard to work in Hollywood, how about competition?
Matthew Holman: It is a lot of work - in the amount of work and the amount of time. It is a very political environment and the competition is intense! You are only as good as your last blow out.
imSalon.at: In one sequel of “Days of our Lives“ you were even seen in the show? How was it playing yourself on TV?
Matthew Holman: Hilarious - I couldn't believe it. It was amazing to be on the other-side. It helped me to understand what the actors need from me. Also, I really appreciated that casting involved us (Glen Allen - Make up & I) as we had just won our Emmy.
