Damien Carney aus England: Exklusiv Interview

Damien Carney gehört zur britischen Creme de la Creme was Contemporary Hairdesign betrifft.

DAMIEN CARNEY:Das hängt immer vom jeweiligen Konzept ab.

imSalon.at: Wie näherst Du Dich jeder neuen Fotocollection?

Less is more.

imSalon.at: Hast Du Vorbilder (Leifiguren) in unserer Branche?

imSalon.at: Which achievements are you most proud of?
DAMIEN CARNEY:Voted 50 Influential hairdressers – Modern Salon / USA
Best 50 Hair Stylists book – Rick Morton
Winning British Hairdresser of the year
Finalist - NAHA awards
Involvement with charities – City Of Hope
International Artistic Director – Joico/ Shiseido
AIPP – Finalist – Best Avant-Garde category

imSalon.at: Du arbeitest auch viel in New York und Los Angeles.

DAMIEN CARNEY:Im Moment gar keine! Dennoch meine Favoriten bleiben: New York, Paris, Berlin, etc..

imSalon.at: Gibt es zur Zeit interessante Hair Fashion-Entwicklungen in England?
DAMIEN CARNEY:Nichts besonderes.

imSalon.at: Und was kommt bei Dir als nächstes?
DAMIEN CARNEY:Nein, Nein, Nein!

ORIGINAL INTERVIEW

imSalon.at: Most Austrian Hairstylists look up to London and its Hairstylists for inspiration and creative input. How about you, living and working in London? Which country/ city or individual places do you visit and look for inspiration and trend research?
DAMIEN CARNEY: London is a very important part of my inspiration and my life in general. It a city that is unique in art, designers, architecture, editorial magazines, etc. The British are not fearful of expressing their creativity.
It’s a way of life and a cultural way of seeing things. There are many types of fashion and beauty. Individualism is key in today’s world. Doing what everyone else does, wont make you stand out. So creativity is competitive in a positive way.

We have 4 seasons and this offers different options when it comes to working on new ideas. Different colours, shapes, lengths, etc.

Most of my career has been focused in education. I worked at Trevor Sorbie at his academy of hair I’ve owned my own salon in Covent Garden London. But education, editorial work and some celebrities is where my heart is.

I travel constantly which I love. Between London, NY and LA. And all the other countries worldwide in between. I’m lucky as I get to see a lot of diverse ideas, looks and inspiration.

Inspiration is not where you look or where you get your ideas its more about how you look at your ideas and what it means to you. We can all look at the same thing yet see something completely different.

imSalon.at: Your work is on an absolute top level of creativity and perfection in hair, make-up, fashion, set design and photography. How many people are involved in the production of a collection?
DAMIEN CARNEY:It all depends on the concept. Some times there’s a full team of
Set designer, make up, wardrobe, models, photographer, hair colourist, assistants, etc. Could be a team of 10 – 15.

Some times its just me the make artist, model and photographer.

The bigger the team the bigger the concept or idea. I generally like to work in smaller teams as the spirit and feeling if the shoot is more direct and pleasantly intense. However a larger team can add more ideas or more confusion depends on how it goes.

imSalon.at: Your work is quite theatrical! Have you done work in theatres or on film?
DAMIEN CARNEY:No I’ve never worked in either. Although I have close friends that do and we often get together to talk about ideas or ways of doing things, I like to tap into this area of hairdressing. The range of my work varies with this collection yes they might be a little over the top. But it depends whom looking at my work. Some say it’s tame and some say it’s edgy and some say it’s over the top. Nothing shocks or surprises me. I’ve seen all types of hairdressing. The key thing is to please your own vision and feed you heart creatively. I spent a good part of my career with Trevor Sorbie the master of avant-garde and thinking outside the box. I also had the pleasure of working with Eugene Souleiman Probably the best editorial hair stylist in the world today.

imSalon.at: How do you approach each new Photo-Co llection? Could you give us some insights into concept finding till choice of models, etc.
DAMIEN CARNEY:Quite simple really. I usually find a few words or two images that depict the concept. I find too much analyzing and too many ideas, words, discussions images of inspiration can confuse or contradict each other.
I like to work with the same team so were in tune with each other. Occasionally I will work with new talent. If it’s a personal project.

Models are often the hardest. Finding the models that understand your ideas and concept. I like to go for models that have a little edge or character. I like a little twist or surprise. Cutting and colouring is every artists dream to have a model that will let you do what you want. These models do exist in small quantities you have to hunt for them.

imSalon.at: How much time is needed from concept finding till the actual release of the images?
DAMIEN CARNEY:This could all be done in a week, if all your team is available. But this is rare. You usually have the concept, words, and photos. Meet with the photographer and stylist first. Debate and finalize the concept more.
Then meet with the make up artist and show visuals and how the concept is developing. Then the model call, the photographer and I will choose the models. Models confirmed. Model cards sent to stylist for measurements, and make up so they can see whom they are making up.

Set a date and shoot.
2/3 models per day. 2 models a day gives you more focus time. 3 models a day gives you a quick turn around. I always find when it’s 3 models there will always be a weak one. Often the 3rd model might not get used and be dropped from the collection. Less is more.

Photographer and I select the images and then images go to retouching. Images ready, meet with PR agent, create copy, concept. All set to go out to press. A week is going at it 24/7 and can be costly as the jobs being rushed or pushed for time. I say 4 weeks from start to finish is a general amount of time.

imSalon.at: Who are your role models in the hair industry?
DAMIEN CARNEY:The team that I work with, where ever I go. They don’t have to be big names in the hair industry, or artists that have won many awards. I find youth and enthusiasm inspiring. I love the innocent, enthusiastic approach endearing and inspiring more than any role model.
Fashion magazines, “V” Italian Vogue “ID” magazines. Thierry Muglar.
Alexander Mc Queen to name a few are all role models. My role models are around me every day where ever I go. Role models in a Non Human form.

imSalon.at: Which important educational steps did you undertake throughout your career?
DAMIEN CARNEY:To never stand still. To improve my technical skills and my creative skills. Sadly not enough time, recourses and money is invested in education. It’s talked about a lot but not put in to practice.

When I retrained at Trevor Sorbie years ago it was the best personal and career Investment I had ever made. I had to go 5 steps back to pr oject 10 steps forward.

imSalon.at: Which achievements are you most proud of?
DAMIEN CARNEY:
Voted 50 Influential hairdressers – Modern Salon
Best 50 Hair Stylists book – Rick Morton
Winning British Hairdresser of the year
Finalist - NAHA awards

imSalon.at: You also work in New York and Los Angeles. Which differences do you observe in hairdressing from England compared to the USA?
DAMIEN CARNEY:There are subtle differences but they have a big impact on the end result. USA has a different value of beauty, slightly more contrived, less risky. England – The more individual the better. The British have no shame and will experiment no matter what.
There are many things that influence each country, fashion, climate, media, TV, celebrities. Etc. Neither right nor wrong. I like to bounce between both countries. I find it interesting, entertaining, and inspirational.

imSalon.at: Which countries would you like to travel to further enlarge your portfolio?
DAMIEN CARNEY:None at the moment. With out sounding grand or snobbish, I have been traveling for 20 plus years, worldwide. I’ve been to all the major capital cities. I find I’m traveling to places like India. Borneo, Africa. Nature and inspiration mixed together. But I always find time for my favorites, NY, Paris, Berlin, etc.

imSalon.at: What are the main interesting developments in hair fashion currently in the UK?
DAMIEN CARNEY:Nothing specifically. But the UK is always pushing the boundaries of hair, searching and developing new and interesting concepts when it comes to hair. Experimenting is key to exercising t he creative side of the mind the more you do the more it comes

imSalon.at: So what are you up to for your next collection? May we ask for a slight hint on your next collections topic?
DAMIEN CARNEY:No, No, No!! Only joking. I haven’t a clue what I’ll do next. I don’t plan that far ahead. I’m more organic I like things to flow when and however they want. I usually flip things. I get bored easily. Let’s see how I feel on the day of the shoot. You’ll be the first to see the images when I have them.
